Recording Artist Samory I is one of the more powerful voices in Jamaican music. For well over a decade, he has crafted tracks that have connected with the listener in a variety of ways. He has built a solid catalogue, and it keeps getting better. He starts the year with a powerful message called, “Victory“.
Produced by Tunup Squad and featuring Dancehall Artist Chronic Law, Samory I focuses on the mission in, “Victory”. Joining forces with the “Law Boss“, we get a track that is needed in the streets, and around the world. With a music video directed by Dream Shot This and shot in New York, we see the Artists joining forces while see two brothers interact throughout. The collaboration comes at a time when many are still experiencing hardships, and folks are keeping Chronic Law’s name hot as he had a run in with ICE recently. May we be victorious in this everyday life. Keep Samory I in heavy rotation.

The Bouyon wave is growing, and you better get onboard. Artists like Triszy, Rudy Ru$h, Khallion, and Reo are waving the flag for Dominica, and Redpunchdrip, Strosey, and Devon join for more domination. No subject is safe here, and they get controversial with, “Why Should I?“.
Produced by Xavvoknockin, the “gloves” are off for Redpunchdrip, Strosey, and Devon in, “Why Should I?”. When lovers get into that mood, sometimes the idea of starting a family take over, and whatever happens after the sessions, they believe it was all worth it. We’re guilty of feeling like that, because we can come across a person who has you all in your feelings, and have considering trading it all just to have an offspring or few. Putting that over a Bouyon beat is bound to cause a surge in pregnancies this year. The Artists party it up in a video directed by SkrtVisual, and they make it clear that it’s whatever with them, and if she’s down with the idea, then it’s all good. “Why Should I?” will start up a few conversations, and we’ll see how it goes months later. If you’re not ready for all that, keep it safe.

It’s the season for new things. For Recording Artist Protoje, it’s “Album SZN“! With fans speculating when he will drop a new album, and launch another staging of his popular “Lost In Time” Festival, he calmed them a little with the announcement of an album called, “The Art Of Acceptance“, and teased that the Festival will be returning sooner than we think. Kicking things off the right way, we get the first single titled, “At We Feet“.
Produced by Winta James and featuring Damian “Junior Gong” Marley, Protoje sets the tone this Album SZN with, “At We Feet”. The “unofficial Marley brothers” finally unleashed a collaboration that many longed for, with each Artist dropping solid lyrics that will bring the people together around the world. The single is accompanied by a colourful music video directed by SAMO, and we’re treated to great visuals of Jamaica including the Island’s Architecture, the Farming culture, and of course our Sound System culture. That scene where Protoje stands below the “Private Property. No Beach Access” is just a highlight that is very necessary. Gongzilla and King Digg at the controls, will we also get a collab album? One can hope. Chronixx returned from his hiatus last year, and now Protoje makes his return. Stayed tuned!

We have officially crossed the half mark of the 2020s, and a lot has happened. In Jamaica’s music scene, many new Artists and movements emerged, some fell by the wayside just as quickly as they get the break, and others never made it to the 2020s for one reason or another. We remember those who passed away, and may their music and works live on. In remembering the first half of the 2020s, we look back at a few songs that made impact in the 2020s so far. These songs may have officially given the Artists their big break, rejuvenated a career or few, set Social Media and the streets on fire, and crossed over to the International market. Here are 10 of them in no particular order.
2022 was a year for Dancehall Artist Valiant. While he was building his career for a number of years, his name got the people’s attention thanks to a TikTok video. The video, which found him dressed in Ralph Lauren, gave the birth to the phrase, “Kotch E Hat A lie?“, which found life on Social Media thanks to various posts using the sound. From there, Valiant would capitalize off the buzz with singles like “St. Mary” and “North Carolina“. Those singles enjoyed love in the streets, but it was the Tarick-produced “Dunce Cheque” that took over households, and took flight to various parts of the world. The music video quickly hit over 1 Million views in a couple days, the single overall scored streaming numbers in the millions while securing a place in Dancehall and Social Media, and caused a few controversies thanks to the rise of the “Dunce” movement. Valiant officially became a star, and he keeps the fire going in 2026.
In 2020, people were made aware of an upcoming Dancehall Artist named, Skeng. The Spanish Town native was armed with aggressive lyrics and a presence that would unleash brimstone if he was approached the wrong way. He started to make noise with the gun-toting single “Brrp“, but it was his 2021 release “Gvnman Shift” that would open up the gates for him. His stance as an Intellectual who carefully detailed his badness throughout, placed him on the forefront of Dancehall music. The John Coop/DiTruth-produced “Gvnman Shift” enjoyed viral success, and even had kids in Basic School/Kindergarten reciting the lyrics word for word. Skeng became a star in the 2020s, with hit singles quickly following, and he successfully crossed over to the overseas market thanks to his collaborations with Rapper Nicki Minaj. Ay BWOY!
Manchester-based Dancehall Artist Top Banks continues to stay relevant in music, and always in your screen-recorded videos. Whether hitting the streets or keeping your attention on Social Media, he is the life of the party, and building on his career. He has been gaining significant attention from some of his fellow peers including Producer DJ Mac, and Dancehall Artist Valiant. Speaking of Mac, who has been collaborating with Banks for some time, check out the video for, “Tumble Dung“.
Directed by Kreative Klique, Top Banks bogles his way to the top in the video for, “Tumble Dung”. Surrounded by the ladies, the Deejay is enjoying his career currently, and shares some of the vibes he experiences daily. The viral single “Tumble Dung” was produced by DJ Mac, who makes an appearance in the video along with Valiant, and this is just a small bit of what’s next for the “Team Corruption Boss“. As we speak, the Deejay is finalizing more content in between his livestreams, and is ready to make a bigger impact.

2026 is the year for Dominica, and nothing can stop that. With the Bouyon movement growing thanks to the likes of TriSzy and Rudy Ru$h, “Di Bouyon Rockstar” Khallion and the “Prince Of Bouyon” Reo are adding with their music releases. With Bouyon, it’s always a party, and things get crazy in, “Di Rum Dat Do Me Dat“.
Directed by Obanga Muzik, Khallion and Reo find themselves at the Airbnb in the video for, “Di Rum Dat Do Me Dat”. When one is feeling the party vibes, and there are Women and Rum involved, it’s going to be a experience that either lives on in memory, and ends in the bathroom the following morning. Khallion and Reo get away with the liquor in this video with their lady friends, turning up at the house party, and causing the Owner of the property to come over and deal with the situation. The Bouyon wave is coming for 2026, be ready to be a part of it with your Surfboards. What’s your choice of Rum?
