We’re kicking off the first Oldies Sunday for the month of July with some Spanish vibes! It’s Summer, and we’re feeling the vibe to dance! For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we head off to Puerto Rico to check out Jerry Rivera’s “Amores Como El Nuestro (Love Like Ours)“.

Written by Omar Alfanno, “Amores Como El Nuestro” was released through Sony in 1992, this was a Salsa love song that was backed by some amazing Instrumentation including some addictive horns. With lyrics about preserving a unique love no matter what’s going on, Jerry Rivera delivered beautifully on this track. You can’t help but dance to this one, and it’s a great way to kick off any week, any day, any season. “Amores Como El Nuestro” was a successful single for Jerry Rivera, becoming an award winning track, and making his 3rd album, “Cuenta Conmigo” his most successful release. “Amores Como El Nuestro” remains one of his most recognized singles as well.

The years that followed the release and success of “Amores Como El Nuestro”, it gained new life through being sampled on various tracks. From Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq’s “Uptown Baby“, to Wyclef Jean and Claudette Ortiz’s “Dance Like This” (which was also sampled for Wyclef’s “Hips Don’t Lie” with Shakira), to French Montana’s “FWMGAB“, to Emilio Rojas’ “Flaco“, “Amores Como El Nuestro” is a timeless track, and remains an important contribution to Salsa Music.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Menudo – If You’re Not Here (By My Side) (1984)

We’re in the month of May, but the Oldies still play! May is also recognized as “Child’s Month“, and we may feature content where the children were stars. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Puerto Rican boy band Menudo with the track, “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)“.

Produced by Edgardo Díaz and Mary Lynne M. Pagan, “If You’re Not Here” was released through RCA Records in 1984. The track is the English version of the Spanish single titled “Si Tú No Estás“, which was featured on the band’s 1983 Spanish album, “A Todo Rock“. The track was a love song that was lead by then member of the band Robby Rosa a.k.a. Draco Rosa about having that special person in his life, and things would not be the same without her especially during touring. This was a track that would connect with young Women, and it became a popular one in various parts of the world (including Jamaica), and was performed during live performances despite not charting high on (#36 on the US R&B Billboard charts, #102 on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts). “If You’re Not Here” was featured on the band’s 1984 English album, “Reaching Out“.

Menudo has been considered one of the biggest Latin boy bands in history with over 20 Million records sold. The band was also the starting point for Ricky Martin, who was a member for a few years during his youth and went on to have a very successful solo career. Since the release of “If You’re Not Here”, Menudo went through various lineup changes, breakups, reunions, controversies, and the death of two former members (Ray Reyes and Anthony Galindo). Regardless of all Menudo went through, many people around the world still play their music, including “If You’re Not Here (By My Side)”.

It’s only a few days before Christmas Day, but we had to get you an Oldies Sunday fix. For the month of December, we feature some of the Christmas songs you grew up on. Today’s selection finds us in Puerto Rico for Musicians/Producers Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe’s “Esta Navidad“.

Produced along with Jerry Masucci and released through Fania Records (a first for the label) in 1971, Christmas gets some Latin flavour thanks to the sounds of Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe. Willie and Hector are legends in the genre, and making Christmas music was just another extension of their respective brands, and showed that they could make gold out of anything. “Esta Navidad” was featured on the duo’s 1971 album, “Asalto Navideño“. Nothing like shooting a video in Jamaica, right? Well popular Reggaeton Artist Ozuna, and the “Queen Of The BX” a.k.a. “Bardi” a.k.a. Cardi B, released the visual to their latest collaboration titled “La Modelo” (Model). Directed by Dimelo Vi, and shot in Portland (including the World famous Trident Hotel), Ozuna stays fresh on the scene and gets cozy with Cardi while she oozes sex appeal in every scene. The video also features some great shots of the area throughout, and the addition of Dancers add to the vibe of the Dancehall inspired single. Fans will be pleased to hear Cardi singing a few notes as well. Cardi has been having an amazing year filled with Billboard top spots, Grammy Noms, and a lot of buzz coming her way. Ozuna continues to soar in stardom, and is riding high off the release of his latest EP, “Odisea“. Check out the visual below.

Recently, subscribers of popular streaming network Netflix, were treated to a bunch of new content. One of the new programs included the series, “She’s Gotta Have It“. Adapted from the 1986 Spike Lee Joint, the storyline revolves around a young woman and her three lovers. The series however features a great selection of music from Hip Hop to Reggae for its soundtrack. Lending their sounds to the series included Reggae Artist Fanton Mojah, Reggaeton Artist Daddy Yankee, Reggae Band Steel Pulse, Dancehall Artist Opal, and Soca Artist GBM Nutron! In episode 2, you can find Fanton Mojah’s “Kingston Town” which features Capleton and Turbulence, Opal’s “This Me Know“, and Daddy Yankee’s “Hula Hoop“. In episode 4, you can find Steel Pulse’s “Can’t Stand It“, and GBM Nutron’s “Scene” (plus a shout out from the series’ Protagonist). Season 1 of the series is out, so you can “Netflix and Chill“.
