It’s been a while since the world has heard from Five Steez. When he wasn’t busy making music, he has been putting the running shoes on overtime, being a part of daily runs, and participating in a few marathons. The time has come for him to get off the track, and focus on this new track called, “Wild Jamaicans From Kingston“.

Produced by Inztinkz and featuring Sly Rankin, Five Steez delivers some commentary on his Island home in, “Wild Jamaicans From Kingston”. The Rappers shed a light on the craziness that gets highlighted on Prime Time News, providing views that elude a few Tourists who only see the Resorts and white sand beaches. They talk about the crime, the body counts, the protests, and the drama, but it’s still home regardless. Production borrows vocals from Hip Hop Icon Nas’ “Thief’s Theme“, and Inztinkz gives the beat a feel that you can’t help but rock to while Steez and Sly paint the pictures. They say there a few types of Jamaica, this is just one of them.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Reggie Stepper – Drum Pan Sound (1990)

The Soundclash culture is one that many should be celebrating. The world has seen the rise of many sounds, and the derailment of some thanks to the Soundclash events where they pit their best against each other. The Dubplate is a very important tool in a Soundclash, and many of your favourite Artists have recorded tracks to be used in the wars. For our Oldies Sunday selection, we highlight an Artist who has recorded his share of dubplates that have aided many sounds. His name is Reggie Stepper, and his track is “Drum Pan Sound“.

Produced by Steely & Clevie on the “Stalag Riddim” and released through their label in 1990, Reggie Stepper gets into some Soundclash vibes on “Drum Pan Sound”. Throughout the track, he jeers the sounds who aren’t at their best, and there is no tolerance for those who can match up to his team. Stepper throws in his signature style, and it puts the listener in the audience at a Soundclash. “Drum Pan Sound” became a popular track for Stepper, and Selectors would request Dubplate versions for their respective sounds. “Drum Pan Sound” was also sampled over the years on tracks like “Wreck Shop” by Run-D.M.C., “Chief Rocka” by Lords Of The Underground, and recently on Nas’ “Magic 2” album on the track, “Bokeem Woodbine“.

Since the release of “Drum Pan Sound”, Reggie Stepper continued to release more music, perform in various parts of the world, and fulfilled Dubplate requests for many Selectors and sounds. “Drum Pan Sound” remains one of his more recognized tracks.

@Sizzla876’s “Woman I Need You” Sampled On @DJKhaled’s “Grateful”!

“Oh she cute eeh?” are the opening words to Reggae Artist Sizzla’s “Woman I Need You” single from his critically acclaimed 2002 album, “Da Real Thing (Get It Here)“. At the time, Sizzla was on a blazing trail thanks to his “One Of Those Days (Dry Cry) single, but today he has another high point in his career. Today marks the release of DJ Khaled’s 10th studio album, “Grateful“, and Sizzla is both featured and has his 2002 single sampled on the album. “Woman I Need You” was produced by Bobby “Digital” Dixon for Digital-B Records on the “Dem Gone Riddim“. The sample appears on the track, “It’s Secured” which features Rapper/Producer Travis Scott, and Hip Hop Icon Nas, and produced by DJ Khaled, Cool & Dre, and 808-Ray. This marks the second time the track has been sampled as it first appeared on Rapper Cam’Ron’s 2004 “More Gangsta Music” which featured fellow Rapper Juelz Santana. Digital-B Records has been a part of many successful singles from the likes of Shabba Ranks, Coco Tea, Morgan Heritage, his son Giark, the late Garnet Silk, and was the Producer of Sizzla’s “Black Woman and Child” album. DJ Khaled’s “Grateful” album also features Dancehall Artist Mavado with production from Jamaican Producer Troyton. The album is now available on iTunes, and all streaming services. OLDIES SUNDAY: 6 Super Cat Intl. Collabs You Haven’t Heard In A While

You know him as the Wild Indian, the Wild Apache, the Don of all Dons, but he is also known as Super Cat! One of the legendary Deejays from Jamaica, Super Cat commanded the crowd, and ruled the airwaves. Today on Oldies Sunday (we’re back after a few months), we won’t highlight the hits, as you know them well, but refresh your memory or introduce to you International singles that featured the Don Dadda. Many know the original version over Dancehall production, but this Hip Hop version was a hit in the US clubs. Produced/Remixed by DJ Eddie F., the combination of Super Cat and the late Rapper/Producer Heavy D was a winner no matter what Riddim it rode! Me love mi Chicken and mi Goat well curry!

Dolly My Baby (Bad Boy Remix) ft. Mary J. Blige, 3rd Eye, Puff Daddy & Biggie Smalls (1993)

Super Cat was well respected in the Hip Hop crowd, and this remix is one of the few examples of that. Co-Produced by 3rd Eye and Puff Daddy who added verses, Mary J. Blige delivered the backing vocals and featured the debut recording of the late Biggie Smalls who was then unknown. A lot of history in one track as Mary went on to be the Queen of Hip Hop/R&B, Super Cat became a Dancehall legend, Puff Daddy went on to be one of the great Hip Hop CEOs, Biggie went on to be a legend in Hip Hop, and 3rd Eye, who was one of the first Hip Hop acts signed to Motown Records, and was argued to be the creator of the term “Bling Bling” (Lil Wayne was to argue that he coined the term in the late 90s with his single of the same name).

The youngest Veteran Damian “Junior Gong” Marley recently stopped by Hot 97’s “Ebro In The Morning” Radio show. Hosted by Ebro, Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg, Gong spoke on his “Distant Relatives” collaborative album with Rapper Nas still being popular today, the Marley name still being a strong one, starting his own Medical Marijuana business with Ocean Grown Extracts, sharing his favourite songs from his father, his thoughts on Dancehall music today, being an advocate for the legalization of Marijuana in Jamaica and more. While “Distant Relatives” is still a popular album along with his solo albums and Ghetto Youths International compilations, I know fans are just waiting for the next solo project from the Gongzilla in January.
