OLDIES SUNDAY (Christmas): Kenny J – De Paint Brush (1993)

It’s December, and it’s that time of year when we celebrate Christmas on Oldies Sunday! Today we start off the month Parang style with Trini legend Kenny J’s “De Paint Brush“! Handling the production by himself (Kenny Joseph), the track was released in 1993 through the Crosby’s label. The song highlights a holiday tradition in the Caribbean where the household goes through some cleaning in order to accommodate friends and family, and welcome the Christmas Spirit. Reaching for his Paint Brush, Kenny J looks forward to giving various parts of the house a fresh coat of paint. Kenny is also joined by Bobby who adds some lyrics throughout the song to give it more vibes.

For those new to Parang, this is usually a collection of popular folk songs or traditional songs that reflect the Christmas season and its meaning (similiar to Christmas Carols). It originated in Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago, and are usually performed by Parranderos, or some of your favourite Artists.

With releases from Mixing Lab and Rollyn Dyce staying in rotation, Mandeville born/US based Recording Artist DeeClef is next up to bat from the camp with his new single, “Bull Inna Pen“! Delivering a positive message on this one, many will relate to the lyrics as DeeClef talks about those who see you making progress in life, but try to block your blessings. He ensures us that no matter how bad the obstacles and detractors may be, your moments of greatness are there waiting for you, and success is yours for the taking. It’s all about making the money, uplifting yourself out of Impoverishment, and being a leader and inspiration for many.

The single is currently enjoying spins on various Radio Stations locally and online, and is accompanied by a Lyric Video made by New Creation Designs. Happy Friday everyone! While many of us are in the middle of Black Friday shopping all over the world, and our American friends are still sleepy after their Thanksgiving feasts, we thought we’d put a lil pep in your step. Bringing back our #13thStreetThrowback Playlist series, we go back to the year 2002 to check out the “Diwali Riddim“!

Produced by Steven “Lenky” Marsden and released through the 40/40 Label, the Riddim gave us plenty memorable tracks from the likes of General Degree, Wayne Wonder, Buju Banton, Danny English, and timeless hits like a track called “Get Busy” by Sean Paul (which was featured on a multiplatinum album), and a duo named Brick & Lace with the hit, “Love Is Wicked“. The Riddim has also been sampled by Tiwa Savage, Thutmose, Lumidee, and a certain Superstar by the name of Rihanna.

Kxng Izem gave listeners that amazing “24 Eden Garden, Kingston 10” project in 2017, but today we’re proud to present the long-awaited follow up titled, “Many Moods Of Izem“! While the debut found him searching for the truths Society failed to answer, he continues the journey on the sophomore project with questions about love, hate, betrayal, failure, corruption, ambition, life, and death. The project finds him with. many moods as he comes across a sequence of thoughts, emotions, experiences, and self-taught lessons while delivering positive messages for those who need them. The project is backed by a blend of Dancehall, Reggae, Afrobeats, and Pop sounds throughout with production by Dylan, Chrisville, and his Ten24Music imprint.

When asked about the project, Kxng Izem shared, “My aim for this project is to help people to overcome fears of not taking risks, to trust themselves, to be vigilant, to be their own motivators, to develop an understanding of circumstances that surrounds them and channel their energies into a positive outcome while tuning out the wrong frequencies they’ve become accustomed to. This project was created within two weeks during sessions of ‘Musical Venting’.”

OLDIES SUNDAY: Triston Palmer – Joker Smoker (1980)

This one is for all those who have that one annoying friend (or a bunch of friends) who are just not about that Ganja life in every way. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the legendary Triston Palmer a.k.a. Tristan Palma with the track, “Joker Smoker“! Produced by Jah Thomas, this was released through the J&J label in 1980 with releases through other labels over the years. The song was also featured on Triston’s 1982 album of the same name. Throughout the track, Triston calls out those who love to be around the smokers and instead of respecting the space and culture, they became an irritation. Many can relate to this as there are those who cause money and Marijuana to be wasted, the loss of lighters and other paraphernalia, and tempers to flare up.

“Joker Smoker” became one of Triston Palmer’s most famous tracks, and has been sampled by the likes of Electronic Dance Artists Top Cat and DJ Solo, and by Dancehall Artist Aidonia who even borrowed the song’s title for his single. The song’s title continues to be used among those who are not about that Stoner life as well. Be wary of who you share your Weed with.
