Jamaican Hip Hop commanding attention

Kingston, Jamaica: Hip Hop does not readily come to mind when one thinks of music in Jamaica despite the father of the culture being Jamaican-born Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc – a Jamaican immigrant to the Bronx who took the local sound system culture to New York. Jamaicans and their children in the United States have contributed greatly to Hip Hop music as artistes and producers, making it a true product of our diaspora and ‘blood relative’ to Dancehall and Reggae.

While Jamaica has never been known to have its own home-grown Hip Hop artistes, that is slowly changing, and the island’s premier Hip Hop event, Pay Attention, is leading the way. Started in April 2012, Pay Attention has provided a regular party and showcase atmosphere for local Hip Hop practitioners and fans alike. Held almost monthly since its start as a free event, Pay Attention has brought hundreds to its past venues, and now, as a paid event, has a loyal following of scores of people. The event, currently held inside Club Indulge at South Beach Café, was started by a close-knit group of
like-minded individuals, who all wanted to see a space for the local Hip Hop community, which was previously scattered and fragmented. The event’s Public Relations Manager, Raquel Allen, says, “Pay Attention is where people may come and get familiar with what Jamaica has to offer in terms of genuine Hip Hop music. It is also about community-building for us as it serves as a hub for the scene.

Pay Attention’s Musical Director and Resident DJ, Inztinkz – also one of the scene’s respected producers – points out that one may hear locally-produced Hip Hop in the mix with international Hip Hop, ranging from the ‘old school’ to the ‘underground’ to current hits. Host of the event and local artiste, The Sickest Drama, says “We definitely have seen some of Jamaica’s Hip Hop artistes getting more exposure over the past few years, although the movement has yet to penetrate the mainstream. People like Five Steez and Nomad Carlos have been releasing material and growing their audiences, particularly online and  internationally, and they are also an integral part of this event and movement.

Past performers include Sly Rankin; Hip Hop-fusion band, Acmatic; Reggae-fusion lyricist, Kabaka Pyramid; and upcoming dancehall diva, J Capri. While the event seeks to showcase local Hip Hop acts, it also embraces other local artistes who fuse elements of Hip Hop in their music.

On Saturday June 15, clothing company REPJA and Reggae artist I Octane launched their collaboration in the form of a t-shirt at the premiere clothing store “Base Kingston & Belle” located at the Manor Park Plaza. While the event started later than the announced 3 pm, customers and onlookers got to see the new t shirt along with other creations by REPJA owners and designers Andre Allen, Omar Thomas, and Prince Graham. Since their inception in 2007, REPJA has managed to gain recognition all over the world. With celebrities such as Shaggy, Leon from Dormtainment, Beenie Man, and Konshens rocking the gear, their collaboration with I Octane marks as their Introduction to the Jamaican market. The design features a robotic hand forming the “gun fingers” gesture to signify the phrase “Buss A Blank” which is the name of I Octane’s hit. Patrons were also treated to music juggling  by DJ Vise, dancing by DanceJA and BG Dancerz, and performances from Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall and of course I Octane. The t shirt will be available at Base Kingston, REPJA.com, and select venues where I Octane will be performing. The shirt is so cool, I’m sorry I didn’t get one. On Saturday June 8, 2013, New Kingston’s Club Indulge (Upstairs South Beach Cafe) was treated to a showcase of Jamaican Hip Hop, this show was called Pay Attention. Hosted by The Sickest Drama (TSD), we got t o witness performances by some of Jamaica’s best talent. Performers included TMO, Gully Cash, Sly Rankin, and Acmatic. The show had a slightly late start thanks to “Jamaican Time” but some old school hip hop hits played by Fatalic Sounds held our attention until showtime. The Sickest Drama held his own as the host for the night with his random freestyles, but not in any way taking away from the main performances.

NEW VIDEO: @MooreMayhem – About the VW SuperBowl Commercial…

carla

Have you seen the new commercial VW released to promote their new vehicle? In the video an American mimicks the Jamaican accent and ideals and encourages his co-workers to smile and be happy. In addition to the release of the video, many people have been commenting about it and giving either positive reviews…or negative ones suggesting that it’s racist. I personally think it was rather funny and shed a positive light on us since many foreigners believe we are very violent people. Fellow blogger Carla Moore speaks her mind on the matter, check out what she has to say by clicking on the video below and sharing your comments.

The winner for Best Music Blog is…“…”The winner for Best Entertainment Blog is…13thStreetPromotions!

I’m still surprised that I won two awards at the Jamaica Blog Awards, this has been a highlight. While i’ve said some thank yous on twitter, I do want to say many thanks to all who voted for me, visited my blog, shared my links, and worked with me. My blog means so much to me, it’s my baby so to speak, and being able to help people was also a pleasure. Many of you don’t know that my blogging has helped me in more ways than just gaining views. I’ve been suffering bouts of depression since 2011 and while I have a few people to thank for their help, my blog also helped me out of it…not 100% but I’m getting there. I’ve also dealt with the feelings involved in being unemployed, even though I’ve been hired as a freelance writer for MechanicalDummy.com i’m still going through a few things.

One thing I wanted to mention in my speech that I never got to say. Investors, Artists, Media Houses, Businesses…HELP THE BLOGGERS! We are not just people who “Live” behind a computer, many of us are still unknown…reach out to us, work with us!

Special mention goes out to Jody Ann Williams, StacyAnn Hayles, Damali Henry, Tamara Weller, Shana ReidLouise KearnsRamekee James, Dadrian Gordon, Andre Byfield, Carla Moore, Calvin StovallOrnella Young, Kadeem MorrisTammy and Floyd, TashieBrady Brown, Rochelle Campbell, Corve DaCostaBrittany BlackwoodShawna Green and Ricardo Brooks.
