Today marks the 45th Birthday of the one they call “Gargamel“, Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie! While the word is he’ll be a free man by the end of the year, we still celebrate him as if he’s already here. His music has touched the lives of many over the years, and many have shown respect in the form of covers, tribute songs, and by sampling him. Today, we feature a few songs that have sampled him. #FREEBUJU! Check them out below, and show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
The Major Lazer sound continues to reach the heart and soul of many! With their EP “Know No Better” still making its round, and before they embark on touching down in Jamaica later this month, they release the visual for the Sean Paul and J Balvin assisted “Buscando Huellas“! The video was directed by Juan Pablo Valencia, and features only Jillionaire, J Balvin, and some unique Dancers having a small dance off inside an abandoned building. With the song’s blend of Reggaeton, Dancehall, EDM, it calls for the Dance groups to perform coordinated moves to this one. Would’ve been cool if Sean Paul was present for this, but he was probably on tour with Chi Ching Ching. Time to bust a move, watch the video below!

The “World Boss” is really living up his role as one of the hardest working Deejays despite his current situation. Earlier, the good folks at Major Lazer unleashed a special remix of the Nicki Minaj and PartyNextDoor featured “Run Up” with vocals from Vybz Kartel! Kicking it off with “Gaza Nation!“, Kartel goes into overdrive as he gives the ladies the lyrics that will have them clinging on to him like magnet to steel. He also made reference to having fun at the popular Summer Party series, Dream Weekend. A single that has had its share of remixes (including a Konshens Remix, and one by Dancehall Artist Khxos), but of course a Vybz Kartel version will make its rounds in various parties. Mi chain have so much Karat (Carrot), like me murda Bugs Bunny! Listen to the track below.
Jamaica has made its way onto International Televisions once again thanks to Commercials. Recently, Cereal brand Cheerios released a series of Commercials with the focus on Family. One Commercial in particular focused on Babies and providing the soundtrack was Major Lazer (which featured only Diplo and former member Switch at the time), and Vybz Kartel’s 2009 hit, “Pon De Floor“! The Commercial featured various clips of Babies and the messages, “More Babies, Please” and “They’re Fun!” while the Instrumental to the single plays throughout. “Pon De Floor” helped to bring Vybz Kartel’s career to another level (and Financial bracket), and went on to be sampled on one of Recording Artist Beyonce’s biggest hits, “Who Run The World (Girls)“! The single was also featured on Major Lazer’s “Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do” album and opened the door for many remixes. Shout out Commercial Tunage! The Jamaican Influence continues to flood media all across the World this year in various forms. Recently, Youtube launched their Youtube Music service along with a new Mobile App. To help promote the new ventures, they’ve released a series of Commercials featuring various real world themes with soundtracks provided by some popular Musicians. In their latest titled “Tina’s Theme“, Jamaica’s own Walshy Fire (Major Lazer) and Virginia based Reggae Band Machet provided the music with their “Naturally” single. The single was released in May and has been well received online since. It’s not just what we listen to, it’s who we are.
