When Jamaica’s involved in something, it’s gonna be great. Tonight, BET kicked off their annual Hip Hop Awards. While they’ve featured some of the best in music, many were waiting for the much anticipated “Reggae Cypher“!

Featuring Shenseea, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Skip Marley, Koffee, with ZJ Liquid handling the DJ role, the artists did what they had to do over Damian “Junior Gong” Marley’s classic “Welcome To JamRock“, and represented Jamaica and Dancehall. Given that Covid 19 is still around, the Cypher had to be pre-recorded for broadcast. Can you imagine if all artists were performing live? Lots of high energy would be given. Big up the artists, another one for Jamaica!

OLDIES SUNDAY: The Blackstones – Best Love (1996)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from UK based Reggae trio, The Blackstones! We go back in time with them to check out their single, “Best Love“. Produced by Bernard Collins, this was released in 1996 through Prestige Records. The track is dedicated to that special person who holds your heart, and The Blackstones speak for us when they say, “Your love is the best love for me…“. With their soulful vocals and a Riddim that you can’t help but slow dance to, “Best Love” is one that deserves plenty spins.

“Best Love” was featured on the group’s 1996 album, “Riding High“, and was well received in the Lovers Rock scene in Jamaica and the UK. The song was sampled for US Rapper Action Bronson’s 2020 single, “Golden Eye” which was produced by Budgie. Formed in 1974, The Blackstones is a group that showcases beautiful harmonies, and raises the bar for vocal styles and sounds that were set by groups before them like The Techniques, The Gaylads, The Wailers, The Paragons, and many others. Originally consisting of brothers Leon, Neville, and Byron Leiffer, The Blackstones has made changes over the years as Neville and Byron left to pursue solo careers. They were replaced with Tony Douglas and Ken Kendricks in the 1980s. Since then, more changes were made, and the group now consists of Leon Leiffer, Tony Mahoney, and Junior Bailey. Some of their most notable work involved them working with the late Sir “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One, Phil Pratt for Channel One Studios, and the late Bunny “Striker” Lee.

.@PopcaanMusic & @RealJuniorReid Featured On @DaveEast’s “Karma 3 (Deluxe)”

Hip Hop Artist Dave East has been one of the more consistent voices in the genre in the past few years, and has always delivered. With a slew of mixtapes, he has always had some tricks up his sleeve for the listening public. On his latest project, “Karma 3 (Deluxe)“, he tapped into his Caribbean side with collaborations from Jamaica’s own Popcaan, and the legendary Junior Reid.

On “Unruly” featuring Popcaan, Dave East and the Unruly Boss do some damage over the CitoOnTheBeat production. From Dave namedropping “Shottas“, Buju Banton, Vybz Kartel, and Super Cat, to dropping badness on the beat, to Popcaan delivering melodic lyrics, you can’t play this one on a low volume. On “Badness” featuring Junior Reid, Dave jumps on the Sool Got Hits and ATG Musick produced banger while Junior Reid gives us his signature sound that has stood the test of time. Both Popcaan and Junior Reid are no strangers to these collaborations, but it’s always a good time when they find themselves taking over an International artist’s track.

Every King needs a Queen, and Recording Artist Kvlar is thankful to have found his. He expresses how he feels for her in his latest track titled, “Anchor“. Kvlar handles production along with Mark-Anthony Reid here, the song is Kvlar celebrating the love of his life. He shares their growth, and thanks her for being his biggest fan, his support system, his best friend, and the one who he can turn to in good times and bad. No one is perfect, and sometimes you can have down moments with someone you really love, but if they have your back through it all, life can get a lil easier moving forward. A great song from Kvlar who we believe is an artist you need to listen to more.

Be on the look out for more from Kvlar in the coming months. He looks to drop a project next year, but in the meantime check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

YoungPow Unleashes 90’s Dancehall Vibes With Chino McGregor On “Riddim Ryda Style”

Throw on your Travel Fox and Karl Kani for this one! Grammy award winning Producer/Songwriter Sean “YoungPow” Diedrick wants to take you back to a wonderful time in music, the 90’s Dancehall era, with a twist! Having recently announced the “Riddim Ryda” project, he kicked things off with the release of “Who She Like” featuring veteran Dancehall artist Mr. G. Having made some noise, he’s following up with Chino McGregor on the track, “Riddim Ryda Style“!

On “Riddim Ryda Style”, Chino gives listeners his signature vocals, and doesn’t hold back on the deejaying as he treats YoungPow’s Riddim like a heavy bag at the gym. Ready to mash up any session, Chino gives the 90s the proper respect, and YoungPow picked the right sounds to put together something awesome. “The inspiration for the beat came to me while I was experimenting with one of my sample packs, (‘Sounds From Yard’, Vol. 1),” YoungPow explained. “It’s a somewhat throwback vibe with a modern mix.” The “Riddim Ryda” project also features Popcaan, Common Kings, Kabaka Pyramid, Falkon, and more. “Riddim Ryda” is also a follow up to his “Turn It Up Riddim” project, and Answele’s “Jah Is In Control” single, which were released this past summer.
