Happy New Year! We hope 2019 will be an amazing year for you and yours. How about some Oldies Sunday? Kicking off the new year, we had to bring some energy, and today we went back to the year 2006 with Dancehall Artist Munga Honorable’s track “Flipping Rhymes“! Produced by Don Corleonie on the “High Altitude Riddim“, this was one of the tracks that got Munga’s name buzzing and kicked off a streak of hits. On the track he showcased an aggressive flow blended with an Autotuned delivery that became his signature sound for quite some. With Don’s production, the song became a hot track, and rapidly placed him as an Artist to watch.

Munga continued to release singles over the years with some being moderate hits. While he has had some issues in his career and life over the years, he has been toiling his way back on the scene, and earning respect from many. If you’ve been unaware, Reggae/Dancehall Icon Buju Banton is finally a free man! Having done his time in Federal Prison, Friday December 7 became a day to remember when word got out that he would be making his triumphant return to Jamaica, and return to freedom. Today on Oldies Sunday, we salute the Gargamel’s  return with one of our favourites, “Me Too Bad” (o/c “Too Bad“)! Produced by Leftside & Esco on the “Throwback Giggy Riddim“, Buju effortlessly rides the riddim as he flexes his rather uncanny ability to drive the ladies crazy and requesting his presence ever so often. With lyrics like “Outta road, nuff gyal a mad ova me“, and “Mi Babymada seh mi bad, mi too bad…“, you know Buju has a way with the ladies. The single was released through VP Records and quickly became a hot track in the streets. It was also featured on his 2006 album, “Too Bad“, and became his first #1 hit in years. With Gargamel’s newfound freedom, many fans are awaiting his return to the booth to unleash the tracks that will have the place in a frenzy, but for now we wish he takes as much time to rejuvenate himself and reconnect with society and loved ones. OLDIES SUNDAY: Aswad – Don’t Turn Around (1988)

Don’t you just love hearing a Reggae cover version of a popular song? Well you’ll love our selection today on “Oldies Sunday“! Today we go back to the 80’s with UK Reggae Band, Aswad with the track, “Don’t Turn Around“. Produced by Chris Porter, this was released through the Mango Label and Island Records in 1988. The song was originally a Tina Turner B-Side written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond and released in 1986, but gained the attention of Aswad when they heard Luther Ingram’s 1987 cover version. The Reggae version turned out to be a hit for the Band as it was the #1 single in New Zealand and UK (with a Silver certification), and a top ten hit in Norway, Ireland, Netherlands, and Belgium. It also influenced Swedish Pop group Ace of Base’s cover version which the Band helped to produce.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Chalice – Sayonara (1986)

Today’s Oldies Sunday was one that should’ve been posted a long time ago, but a recent event inspired its publishing. Remember when Dancehall Artist Shenseea released the visual for her “ShenYeng Anthem“? While many enjoyed the single, there were mixed reviews for the music video because of its intro. With today’s entry, I feel there would be some “outrage” from some folks if this was released today (some folks argue about every little thing online). Today’s entry comes from Chalice (though they were featured before, this song features mostly one of their Vocalists) with their single, “Sayonara“. Written by the legendary Lloyd Lovindeer, this was performed by one of the band’s Vocalists, Wayne Armond. Released through CTS Records in 1986, and Bold Reprive Records in 1987, this track features some Oriental influenced production with Wayne singing about his experiences with a Japanese woman in Jamaica. “Sayonara” (which means “Goodbye” in Japanese) was featured on the band’s “Crossfire” album and was popular in the 80’s and early 90’s. The video for the single was shot in Portland and featured the Boston Jerk Centre. Get familiar with something old by checking out the track below, and share with a friend. OLDIES SUNDAY: Andru Donalds – Mishale (1994)

Today’s Sunday, and that means it’s another “Oldies Sunday“! for today’s selection, we go back to the year 1994 and check out Andru Donalds’ “Mishale“! Produced by Eric Foster White, this was released through Metro Blue Records (a subsidiary of Capitol Records), and song finds Andru expressing how much he misses this woman despite breaking her heart, and the pain he feels for being separated from her. With a unique sound, this Reggae track that was made for International airplay. The song was featured on Andru Donalds’ self titled debut album which was released in 1994.

(Editor’s note: I remember when the video for this premiered on Jamaica’s “Entertainment Report”, and became a fixture on local TV for a while.)

“Mishale” became a hit for Donalds as it received a great amount of radio play in Jamaica, and made it to #38 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The single was also remixed by Ben Chapman, Eric Kupper and Richie Jones, and Luv Dup. Since “Mishale”, Donalds has went on to release 5 more albums including a “Best of” in 2006, found a couple more hits, got his music featured in two Films (Good Will Hunting and Barefoot), and became a lead Singer in the German musical project, Enigma. He is currently touring and spreading the music all over the world, and you can check for his next performance on his website.

OLDIES SUNDAY: A.J. Brown – All Fall Down (1987)

It’s Sunday, and there’s something we’ve missed, and that is “Oldies Sunday“! Today’s selection comes from the legendary A.J. Brown a.k.a. “The Voice Of Jamaica“! Going back to the year 1987, we check out “All Fall Down“. Produced by Peter Ashbourne and released by Busy Bee Records, A.J. gave listeners a funky number in the 2nd half of the 80’s. In the song, A.J. lets a young lady know that despite being involved with other peoples and doing all sort of activities, he knows the way to her heart every time. While she can live in a make believe world, she lets down her guard when he’s around. The song was included in A.J.’s 1988 album, “Rhyme Or Reason“.

“All Fall Down” became one of A.J.’s hits, and he quickly became an Artist to watch. The single became so popular that it was featured on the soundtracks to “The Howling Pt. 3” and “The Fourth Protocol” movies. Since then, A.J. went on to deliver more hits, collaborated/performed with some of the biggest artists out there, lent his voice to various commercials and campaigns, and was also a Judge on Digicel’s Rising Stars competition. He is also the Lead Vocalist for Reggae Band Third World replacing the late William “Bunny Rugs” Clarke.
