OLDIES SUNDAY: Sonya Spence – Let Love Flow On (1981)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. In our next selection, we  highlight the late Singer, Sonya (sometimes Sonja or Sonia) Spence. She was a part of the new wave of promising acts in the 1970s and 80s. Today we look back at her single, “Let Love Flow On“. Produced by Sonia Pottinger (Jamaica’s 1st female Producer) for High Note Records in 1981, this was featured on Spence’s “Sings Love” album that was released in the same year. With a blend of Funk, Reggae, and Soul, Sonya spreads her soft vocals all over the production, and will find you grooving with your favourite person.

While Sonia had a run that birthed a few popular tracks and the release of a few albums, the later days were not very kind to her as she developed a drug habit. She made appearances at various places including Schools (Editor’s note: She made numerous visits to Manchester high when I was a student there) where she would warn against drug abuse, and she’d lend her voice to a few persons along the way till she passed away in 2007.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Barbara Jones – Walk Through This World With Me (1974)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Our first entry comes from a person who was once considered the “Billie Holiday of Reggae Music“, and was a part of the 2nd wave of Reggae Artists in the 1970s, the late Barbara Jones. Today we look back at her single, “Walk Through This World With Me“. Produced by Alvin Ranglin, the single was released through the Producer’s GG’s Records in 1974,and is a cover of the late Country Music Artist George Jones’ 1967 hit.

Known for covering hit singles, “Walk Through” became one of Barbara’s popular songs to perform. While she has enjoyed delivering good music through the 1970s and 1980s, and toured with Jimmy Cliff, she made the move to performing Gospel Music since converting to Christianity in the 1990s. Jones continued the bless many with her music until she passed away in December 2014.

Know Yourself: @Yanah_I Releases New Single, “The Root”!

Closing out Black History Month and Reggae Month, one of our favourite Recording Artists Yanah emerges with new music for 2019! A song that’ll wake you up, she releases “The Root“! Produced by Kone, Yanah celebrates Melanin and the Mother Divine, reminds us all that we are Kings and Queens, and we should always remember where we’re coming from. Know yourself and your history, never let them white wash your brain! Accompanying the new music is a visual brought to us by C. Mills Art with Creative Direction by Kimberley Irons (will update you on that later). With so many having identity crises and those facing terrible situations because of their skin colour, you need songs like this to bring folks together and enforce a new level of consciousness. Gospel Artist @YannickPaul_ Debuts A Song For “Any Situation”.

New York based Gospel Recording Artist Paul Nembhard a.k.a. Yannick Paul has experienced a lot in his life, and he has a story to tell the world. Formerly a Dancehall Artist who performed under the names “Don Snypa” and “Dynasty General“, his music was an outlet for the many trials he and many others have faced. Influenced by Vybz Kartel, he released tracks like “God Nah Sleep” and “Who I Am“, and even performed in a Bronx based group named “Muzik Dynasty“.

The years that followed since his stint as a Dancehall Artist found him dealing with various personal issues, and through some soul searching he gave his life to the Lord. Now deep in his Christian faith, the love of music never left his side and in 2015 he released an EP as a member of the Agape Brothers titled “Organic Theology“.

Nearly 4 years since giving his life to the Lord, Yannick Paul wants to spread the Gospel with his debut single, “Any Situation“. Produced by StrateG Music Group, Yannick sits with the listener and lets them know that no matter the current situation they’re facing, GOD will come through when you believe and wait on Him. The song also encourages the listener to know their worth and don’t succumb to the temptations out there. He also shares pieces of his journey, and expresses how thankful he is to have made the changes in his life. A song that is needed, and is definitely one to share with powerful messages embedded. Be on the look out for more from Yannick Paul!
