.@OriginalKoffee’s “Toast” Featured In @JordanPeele’s @USMovie!

Recording Artist Koffee has a lot to be thankful for. With 2018 seeing her being the talk of the town with her smash hit “Toast” (racking up 16 million views on Youtube currently), signing to Columbia Records, touring the world and touching many with her music, her star has yet to shine its brightest. 2019 so far has seen Koffee making more moves, and this next move that we’ll share might see her standing out even more.

Moviegoers worldwide are anticipating the theatrical release of the Horror flick, “Us“. Directed by Comedian/Director Jordan Peele and starring Trinbagonian-American Actor Winston Duke and Kenyan-Mexican Actress Lupita Nyong’o, it has been the talk of Social Media as Peele’s previous film, “Get Out” was a huge success. Yesterday (March 11) at US based Conference and Festival South By Southwest (SXSW), moviegoers were treated to an early screening of the film, and fans of Reggae music were delighted to hear Koffee’s hit single as it has been included in a scene of the film. Produced by Izy Beats and Walshy Fire, the song finds Koffee giving thanks for her many blessings, and encouraging listeners to show gratitude. We featured it as one of our 2018 favourites, and we’ve seen it cross many seas and nations since its release, even scoring a “Song Of The Year” award at the recently held Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards (JaRIA). Koffee is currently gearing up to release her debut EP, “Rapture” on March 14 which also features “Raggamuffin” and “Throne“.

“Us” hits Theatres on March 22, but you can view the trailer below. Check out our post on Koffee’s “Toast” here, and share. Be sure to show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Sonya Spence – Let Love Flow On (1981)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. In our next selection, we  highlight the late Singer, Sonya (sometimes Sonja or Sonia) Spence. She was a part of the new wave of promising acts in the 1970s and 80s. Today we look back at her single, “Let Love Flow On“. Produced by Sonia Pottinger (Jamaica’s 1st female Producer) for High Note Records in 1981, this was featured on Spence’s “Sings Love” album that was released in the same year. With a blend of Funk, Reggae, and Soul, Sonya spreads her soft vocals all over the production, and will find you grooving with your favourite person.

While Sonia had a run that birthed a few popular tracks and the release of a few albums, the later days were not very kind to her as she developed a drug habit. She made appearances at various places including Schools (Editor’s note: She made numerous visits to Manchester high when I was a student there) where she would warn against drug abuse, and she’d lend her voice to a few persons along the way till she passed away in 2007.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

“GodFather, man a OG…“

Earlier this year, the Quartet of “Godfather of Grime” Wiley, Dancehall Icon Sean Paul, UK Bad Gyal Stefflon Don, and “The Black James Bond” Idris Elba released their collaborative single titled, “Boasty“. As they joined forces to give us a bassy track to keep us feeling swaggy, it was only right they followed up with a music video. Directed by Henry Scholfield, we get a dope performance of the track by the four Artists (except Wiley part was replaced by Child Actor, Brooklyn Appiah) in four different locations (they don’t meet up in the end though). While the track is steadily gaining steam, the video is a nice touch and will get you in the mood to be flashy. Check out the video below, and share with a friend. Pick Up & Run With These Current Dancehall X Soca Hits!

The 2019 Carnival season is officially on its way, and Dancehall artists are teaming up with Soca’s finest stars for various collaborations. It’s definitely a good look for the genres as it gives them more leverage to different markets, even after the seasons is done. Carnival is an International brand with different cities and countries around the world hosting their own. With more interest in the Caribbean culture over the years, it’s a pivotal moment for Dancehall and Soca to make a greater push for the International market with these collaborations. For those unfamiliar, the Jamaican love affair with Soca and Carnival dates back to the 1940s at the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus), and the collaborations over time are just great moments in this ever growing union. With their feel good vibes and ability to bring people together, the collaborations will continue. Today we’re featuring a few of the Dancehall x Soca crossovers that are currently making waves on the scene.
