OLDIES SUNDAY: Shades – She’s Gonna Marry Me (1969)

The month of June is a popular month for Weddings around the world, so why give you all something to add to the playlist? For Oldies Sunday, we go back in time to check out a track by a singing trio named Shades called, “She’s Gonna Marry Me“!

Produced by Winston Riley, Shades’ “She’s Gonna Marry Me” was released through Riley’s Techniques label in 1969. On the track, lyrics about looking forward to marriage are shared, and what the experience will be like when it comes to marrying the love of your life. Shades was a short-lived group composed of former The Techniques Vocalist Bruce Ruffin, former The Paragons member Tyrone Evans, and a 3rd singer who remained anonymous. Given that Bruce Ruffin was a member of The Techniques, some outlets printed copies of Shades’ single with credit given to The Techniques. Nonetheless, “She’s Gonna Marry Me” was a hit for Shades, and was even covered by Reggae singer Junior Delgado in 1979. Since the release of “She’s Gonna Marry Me”, Bruce Ruffin went on to work with numerous Artists and Producers, and even took on a career in Law after the disbandment of Shades, while Tyrone Evans emigrated to the United States, and continued to work with numerous Artists and Producers, and even re-joined The Paragons before passing away in 2000.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Anthony Malvo & Tiger – Come Back To Me (1989)

It’s a new month, and it’s a month that’s popular with Weddings so expect love songs! For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we go back in time to check out Anthony Malvo and Tiger’s (Happy Birthday to the boss!) single, “Come Back To Me“.

Produced by Winston Riley on the Legal Rights Riddim and released through the Techniques label in 1989, “Come Back To Me” is a Dancehall remix of US R&B group The Deele’s (which included Babyface and L.A. Reid) classic, “Two Ocassions“. Anthony Malvo sings away a cut of the original track while Tiger gives us his signature deejaying as it’s all about love here. A music video was released for “Come Back To Me”, and it featured Dancehall personality Pinky, and her sister who would become a future Dancehall Queen named Carlene. This one is for the couples out there, we hope you’re keeping the love alive during the pandemic. Play this one at a high volume!

A couple months ago, Trini Artist Sarkastik Ambassador and Bajan star Rhea Layne gave us a demo of a track they were working on called, “Toxic“. It tackled some of the issues that affect relationships, and many people could relate to the song. Fast forward to the present day, we’re proud to show you the music video for the officially released track.

Directed by Sarkastik Ambassador and starring Nicholas C. Subero and Ruby Parris (related to Paul Parris of The Parris Agency who manages Jus D?), “Toxic” is brought to life showcasing an estranged couple who struggle through moments of tension, restriction, passion and emotional intimacy in just one day of quarantining together. Many relationships have taken a dive in recent months, and the pandemic hasn’t been making things easier for some of us mentally. When this couple isn’t distancing themselves from each other, they’re arguing, but in the end they find themselves getting closer. Hang in there guys, it’s rough out there, and seek help when you can.

Today we take a trip to Trinidad and Tobago to check out an Artist who has been doing her thing for quite some time, the lovely Annalie Prime. She has been steadily rising thanks to some great music, and with the release of her 2020 debut album, “I Think Too Much“, she looks to be a prominent fixture everywhere. Keeping the momentum going, she recently unveiled the new single and video, “Set Your Sight“.

Featuring production by No6le Touch, Annalie Prime gives us a love song that promises to be a go to for many couples, and we believe we’ll look back it years later to give it a “classic” stamp. Accompanying the single, is a music video directed by Sir Ian Davis and the Dawgs Dem collective, and shot at the Ortinola Cocoa Estate on Acono Rd., Trinidad and Tobago. With soft vocals that will calm even the most stressed out person, and wake the world, Annalie Prime is setting her own sights to dominating her lane, and solidifying herself as a young legend. May 9 is a day that is celebrated as “Mother’s Day”. The day finds many Mothers being celebrated, showered with gifts and special treatment, and loved in many ways. In the Caribbean, you can hear dedications of all sorts on the Radio, and events were held in the honour of many Moms. Known for delivering the classic “Thank You Mama” in the mid 2000s, Reggae Icon Sizzla Kalonji surprises the world with the release of “Happy Mother’s Day”!

Produced and released through his Kalonji Music Production, Sizzla brings a wonderful presentation of uplifting lyrics, timeless melodies, and a powerful dedication to all the Mothers out there. While many Mothers are no longer present with some of us, Sizzla looks to comfort those who miss them, and further emphasize that a Mother is one of the most important persons in one’s life.
