On August 17, the world will celebrate the 139th birthday of Jamaica’s 1st National Hero, Pan-Africanist, Activist The Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey. His teachings continue to spread around the world and influence many, and many are still paying tribute to his greatness. Ahead of his birthday celebrations, we share a tribute to this great Man on “Oldies Sunday“. We go back in time to check out Bagga Brown’s “Daddy Marcus“.
Produced by and released through FM-2 Records in 1987 and featuring Tiger and The Jays, Bagga Brown tells the world of the greatness of Marcus Garvey in, “Daddy Marcus”. They highlight Garvey’s mission to liberate Black people, speak on his teachings being an important asset to the young and old, and encourage listeners to study his work. Known as a Media Personality and Master Of Ceremonies/Emcee, Brown recorded a number of singles over the years including “Daddy Marcus”, and enlisting Tiger, who was a popular Deejay at the time, and having The Jays provide melodies made the track one that many tuned in to. While there is no chart information for this one, the song would go on to be an important as it highlights Jamaica’s 1st National Hero.
Since the release of “Daddy Marcus”, Bagga Brown went on to seal his place in Jamaica’s media landscape, and maintained popularity on and off the air. Basil “Bagga” Brown would pass away in 2011 after a battle with Bone Cancer. Many still remember the works of Bagga Brown, including “Daddy Marcus”.
