OLDIES SUNDAY: @SteelPulse – Steppin’ Out (1984)

It’s Grammy season! With Reggae Artists like Koffee, Julian Marley, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse, and Third World in the running to cop one this year, we felt the need to highlight one of the unique moments in the Reggae category on Oldies Sunday. The aforementioned Steel Pulse Band is up with their 1984 classic, “Steppin’ Out“! Produced by Steel Pulse, Jimmy “Senyah” Haynes, and Del Newman, the track was featured on their 5th studio album, “Earth Crisis“. “Steppin’ Out” is also one of the first Reggae singles to be nominated for a Grammy award. The other single to be nominated was Jimmy Cliff’sReggae Night“. The Grammy eventually went to Black Uhuru in 1985 for their “Anthem” album.

With its energetic production, the single became a favourite for many listeners. Since its release, it has been sampled by the likes of Hip Hop Artists Rakim, Bun B, Blac Monks, Society, and EDM Artist Miguel Migs. It has also been covered by Alborosie, and remixed by Producer Steve Thompson, and the late legendary DJ Screw (you can hear the screwed & chopped version below).

Who’s your pick for the Reggae Grammy come January 26? Check out the classic below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Flourgon – We Run Things (1988)

Happy New Year! Today’s Oldies Sunday selection shows love to an Artist who was determined to succeed, despite the odds that were thrown at him. Today’s selection comes from Recording Artist Flourgon with his hit, “We Run Things“! Released through Redman International in 1988, this was produced by Hugh “Redman” James, and finds the Deejay proclaiming that he rules in everything that he does. From music to relationships, Flourgon will not cower to anyone.

A song that was considered one of the biggest hits of 1988, Flourgon lived his lyrics when in March 2018 he filed a US$300 Million Lawsuit against US Pop Artist Miley Cyrus for using lyrics from the track in her 2013 single, “We Can’t Stop“. Despite many doubting the Lawsuit and Flourgon, the case ended in a settlement in favour of Flourgon just days ago. While the amount is undisclosed, it marks a victory and is a sign for other Artists to seek justice for their own situations.

OLDIES SUNDAY (Christmas): Rita Forrester/Queen Rita – Christmas Time Is Here

Continuing with the Holiday vibes, we head on over to the Island of Guyana for “Oldies Sunday“. Today we tap into Singer Rita Forrester/Queen Rita’s popular Christmas song, “Christmas Time Is Here“! Backed by Rudy & The Roosters Band, Rita acknowledges that Christmas has arrived with all the festivities involved, but it doesn’t mean much to her as she misses someone special around that time. She also wishes him well wherever he is, and lets him know that he’s very much on her mind.

While family and friends play a great part in the holiday season, there are many who are facing the loss of key members in their life. While some things will never be the same, we urge you to accommodate family and friends this Christmas. It may just shine a lil light in their hearts, and put a positive spin on things.

OLDIES SUNDAY (Christmas): Mighty Pélay – No More Gift For Christmas (1977)

Happy Sunday everyone! With Christmas popping up in a couple weeks, we head over to the Island of St. Lucia for a Christmas classic. Our selection today comes from the late Calypso legend, the Mighty Pélay ‘s track, “No More Gift For Christmas“! This was released by the WIRL label in 1977, and was featured on the Christmas album, “Merry Christmas Our Way From Mighty Pelay“. While Christmas is synonymous with gift giving, Pélay has a few regrets on this song as he has made the claim to never give gifts nor even ask for any during the season. From purchasing a suit for someone who never wore it, to giving a bed to a girlfriend, only for her to disrespect him in return, to a lot more. Don’t be an Ebenezer Scrooge this Christmas, just be mindful who you gift.

We hope you have a great Christmas if you celebrate it. Check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us show love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

OLDIES SUNDAY (Christmas): Kenny J – De Paint Brush (1993)

It’s December, and it’s that time of year when we celebrate Christmas on Oldies Sunday! Today we start off the month Parang style with Trini legend Kenny J’sDe Paint Brush“! Handling the production by himself (Kenny Joseph), the track was released in 1993 through the Crosby’s label. The song highlights a holiday tradition in the Caribbean where the household goes through some cleaning in order to accommodate friends and family, and welcome the Christmas Spirit. Reaching for his Paint Brush, Kenny J looks forward to giving various parts of the house a fresh coat of paint. Kenny is also joined by Bobby who adds some lyrics throughout the song to give it more vibes.

For those new to Parang, this is usually a collection of popular folk songs or traditional songs that reflect the Christmas season and its meaning (similiar to Christmas Carols). It originated in Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago, and are usually performed by Parranderos, or some of your favourite Artists.

We hope we’ve helped in starting your Christmas season off in a great way! Check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
