OLDIES SUNDAY: @MackaB – False Preacher (1988)

With Jamaica slowly being turned into a 20 season Mystery series shown on Netflix with the news of Kevin Smith and his cult, it’s only right that Oldies Sunday digs in the crates for a selection. This week, we stop in England to check out Reggae legend Macka B’s “False Preacher“.

Produced by Mad Professor and released through Ariwa Sounds in 1988, Macka B plays the role of “Pastor Theodore Love Money” who makes a list of demands that his Church congregation should fulfill because “That’s what the Lord says!“. If the Pastor needs to wear new suits, let the Church goers provide for it. He needs a BMW? Let them pay for it! The single was featured on Macka B’s 1988 album, “We’ve Had Enough!“, which features plenty of commentary from the man himself. With the story of fake Preachers and Pastors being a very common one for many, Macka B has been calling those hustlers out for many years. Some have lead cults, some have made millions and are living better than their members, and some have claimed to have had the direct line to God. Many Church goers have been lied to, tricked, bamboozled, and lead astray, and many fake Pastors and false Prophets will have to answer for their crimes one day.

Since “False Preacher”, Macka B has released numerous albums, and has been a Youtube/Social Media favourite thanks to pairing a healthy lifestyle with his lyrical prowess. He has even been name dropped by popular Media Personality Desus Nice on his “Bodega Boys Podcast“.

It took a lot of work for UK based Recording Artist Alicaì Harley to get here. With a fire burning in her to make it, she “tek it to dem” over the years with good music. With 10 tracks loaded, Alicaì Harley comes through like the “God-blessed pickney” that she is, and deliver a world of styles over some heavy production. With “Bad Gyal” anthems, fun songs, relationship songs, Female Empowerment music, and motivational music, Alicaì makes her voice be heard on a higher level, and lets the world know that this Jamaican gem is here to stay, and make a shift in music. With guest features from Stefflon Don, Moelogo, Nadia Rose, Kojo Funds, and Tony Matterhorn, Alicaì ensures that she is well supported on her debut project. She also blends Dancehall, Pop, Hip Hop, and R&B sounds thanks to production from Beat Demons, Diztortion, AntiWave, “Clevie” Browne of the legendary Steely & Clevie, Seanizzle, Jah SnowCone, and others. With his “Bouff Daddy” single bubbling, he enlisted the assistance of the “Unruly Boss” Popcaan for the remix! Produced by Dre Skull, Poppy brings his flair to the track as he lets you know he’s in the streets like the white line, and doesn’t need to spend money foolishly to get the attention of the ladies. Flexing the “Unruly” way while J Hus shows us what the “Bouff Daddy” life is about. An early Christmas present for those who have been waiting, and another International collaboration for Popcaan. Many of you may not be readily familiar with UK House Singer Kyla, but you do know some of her music. Her more recognized single is the 2008 hit, “Do You Mind (Crazy Cousinz)” which was sampled for Rapper Drake’s hit “One Dance“. Now back on the scene with new music, she’s putting in work! Drawing for some Island vibes, she called up the “Unruly Boss” Popcaan for “You Ain’t Mine“. Produced by Production duo Ill Blu, they provide a beat that will get you rocking as Kyla confronts Poppy about sharing him with another woman. This is not their first collaboration together as they appeared on the Naughty Boy track, “Should’ve Been Me” last year.  Popcaan has been busy on the International scene thanks to his collaborations with Artists like Gorillaz (Saturn Barz), and Ivy Layne (One You Love), let’s see what’s next for him for the rest of the year. Upcoming Producer Signature Takes You On “The Journey” With Debut Beat Tape!

There are Producers who can craft Riddims on the fly, there are Producers who can provide the Soundtrack to your thoughts and lyrics, and there are those who can tell a story. UK based Signature is an upcoming Producer who has a story to tell, and he does so on his debut Beat Tape! Titled “The Journey“, this 10 track project is a result of taking a hiatus from the online world to further develop his skills. Featuring various clips where he’s being Interviewed, he speaks on his aspirations, his inspirations, and the process behind the making of his Tape. The project also features collaborations with Producers SOS Dynamikz, Universal ZincFence, SkyRas, and Kvdence who all bring together their sounds to create that “Audio Dope“! Romell and Xandire however, contribute to the journey with Interludes and providing encouragement. If you’re an Artist looking for a new sound, give Signature a call (Whatsapp or Facetime perhaps?).
