OLDIES SUNDAY: Deborahe Glasgow – Don’t Test Me (1989)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today’s selection comes from the late English born Lovers Rock/Reggae Artist Deborahe Glasgow who, despite a short music career, developed a following, and contributed to a few classic tunes. We check out her 1989 single, “Don’t Test Me“. Produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, this single was featured on her 1989 self titled debut album. It was also released as a single and a duet version with Dancehall Artist Shabba Ranks in 1990. With lyrics about not being a pushover and being confident in one’s self, the single was a rather motivating one back in the day. It got bigger with the addition of Shabba’s contribution, and was sampled by the late Notorious B.I.G. on Hip Hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s remix to their “Get Money” single in 1995.

Having started her career in her teens, she stepped out of the scene to devote more time to her family. Sadly she passed away in 1994, but is still remembered for her contributions to Lovers Rock, Reggae, and Dancehall.

Recording Artist DeeWunn had many listeners moving when he dropped “Mek It Bunx Up” a few years ago, but soon he’ll make them “Back It Up, Drop It“. The upcoming single, which features Brazilian Producer Leo Justi (of Heavy Baile) and released through Waxploitation Records, has recently found its way in Commercials before being available online. Thanks to Electronics giant Samsung, the single was featured in a 30 second promotional spot for the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S10 Smartphone series. The BassHall single provided the soundtrack as the company celebrated 10 years of “Pioneering Mobile Firsts“, and their latest creation.

“GodFather, man a OG…“

Earlier this year, the Quartet of “Godfather of Grime” Wiley, Dancehall Icon Sean Paul, UK Bad Gyal Stefflon Don, and “The Black James Bond” Idris Elba released their collaborative single titled, “Boasty“. As they joined forces to give us a bassy track to keep us feeling swaggy, it was only right they followed up with a music video. Directed by Henry Scholfield, we get a dope performance of the track by the four Artists (except Wiley part was replaced by Child Actor, Brooklyn Appiah) in four different locations (they don’t meet up in the end though). While the track is steadily gaining steam, the video is a nice touch and will get you in the mood to be flashy. Check out the video below, and share with a friend. US Rapper Freddie Gibbs has recently teamed up with Producer/Rapper Madlib to release new music. While he has been enjoying a great 2018, Gibbs aims to go harder for the 2019. One of his latest offerings is the tough talking filled, “Bandana“, and it features one of Jamaica’s elite Artists, Agent Sasco a.k.a. Assassin! Sasco is no stranger to performing with Hip Hop acts here as he’s previously worked with Royce Da 5’9″, with Kendrick Lamar on his Grammy winning “To Pimp A Butterfly” album (“The Blacker The Berry“), with Kardinal Offishall on “OG” and “Legacy“, and with Kanye West on the “Yeezus” track “I’m In It“. The collaborative effort on “Bandana” might be a sign that Agent Sasco will be making his presence felt on many more International releases this year along with pushing his “Hope River” album. This isn’t the first time Freddie Gibbs has made the Jamaican link however as he’s collaborated with Popcaan on “Born Bad“, and has travelled to the Island to be a part of a currently untitled Independent Film. .@BoomDrawOfFizix Blesses The Internet With Some “Jamaican Nujabes”!

Where are the Anime lovers? Were you one of those folks who subscribed to CrunchyRoll and tuned in to Cartoon Network’s “Toonami” segment? What were your go to Anime shows? Inspired by the production of the late Japanese Producer Jun Seba a.k.a. “Nujabes“, Jamaican Producer BoomDraw steps out with his first Dancehall Riddim in over 3 years titled, “Jamaican Nujabes“.

A Riddim that you can really deliver some thought provoking lyrics on, BoomDraw shared that the melodies were inspired by the works of Nujabes as he produced the soundtrack for one of his go to Anime shows, “Samurai Champloo“. One of Boomdraw’s favourite Producers, he wanted to channel the Nujabes’ eclectic approach to putting together sounds, and inject into his Dancehall creations. Boomdraw went on to say, “I wanted the track to feel very vibrant and transport the listener into a carefully constructed soundscape that would bring feelings of euphoria. I feel very satisfied with how the final product turned out and I’m very excited to share it with the listeners.” This production is a follow up to BoomDraw’s “Juss Beats” compilation he released in January.

Think you can drop a song on the beat? The Riddim can be found below, and will be available on popular Streaming platforms on Friday February 8.
