OLDIES SUNDAY: Horace Andy – Our Jamaican National Heroes (1978)

As we remember Jamaica’s National Heroes on October 17 (the day is celebrated every 3rd Monday in October), we look back at Reggae Artist Horace Andy’s “Our Jamaican National Heroes” track. This single was produced by Bunny Lee for the Striker Lee Label in 1978 and features Andy paying tribute to our National Heroes. Here he name drops George William Gordon, Paul Bogle, Marcus Garvey, Alexander Bustamante and Norman Manley as he learned about them during his younger days in School. For those paying attention, you may have noticed the omission of Heroine Nanny of the Maroons as she wasn’t conferred the Order of National Hero until March 1982, and Sam Sharpe the same date. In between the name drops, Horace would speak on the roles each Hero played with mention that George William Gordon and Marcus Garvey were betrayed, Bustamante was the only living National Hero at the time, and Marcus Garvey is the greatest Hero of them all.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @KingStitchie – Great Ambition (1987)

Today we’re taking you back to the year 1987 with Recording Artist Lt. Stitchie! Here we feature his track “Great Ambition” which was produced by Jammy’s Records (King Jammy’s) on the “Kuff Riddim“. In the song, Stitchie speaks on being an ambitious young man while encouraging listeners to be ambitious, listing the goals he’d like to achieve including owning a home, and working to make all this possible. A key part of the single is his Dancehall remix of the 1956 American single, “Que Sera Sera” which was performed by Singer/Actress Doris Day.

Life is just for living, so why not live it up with a cold Red Stripe Beer! Earlier, the “Great Jamaican Beer” premiered their latest Commercial as a part of the “Drink Right” campaign. Featuring Dancehall Artist Wayne Marshall, Dancer/Recording Artist Mystic Davis, and Legendary Reggae Artist Ernie Smith, the past meets the present as the trio remixed Ernie’s 1972 classic, “Life Is Just For Living“. The Commercial/Music Video, which was directed by Darren Scott, captures the essence of what makes Jamaica great along with Ernie meeting up Wayne and Mystic in a Bar. The video also paid respect to one of the earlier versions of the Beer’s bottle/logo designs and highlighted some moments in Jamaica’s past. Fun fact: this is the 2nd time Ernie Smith’s single was used for Red Stripe Beer as a version was made just for the brand (see 1st video below). When last have you had a Red Stripe? We’ve recently lost the man who helped to revolutionize Ska and Rocksteady Music, Cecil Bustamante Campbell, more popularly known as Prince Buster. A musical Pioneer, a brilliant Songwriter and Producer, Prince Buster paved the way that many Reggae and Ska Artists worldwide follow to this day. Today we reflect on the Icon by showcasing his “Prince Of Peace Concert” that was held in Japan in 2003, and a 1998 Levi’s Jeans Commercial featuring the single, “Whine and Grine“.

NEW VIDEO: Hopeton Lewis’ “Take It Easy” Featured In @Corona Commercial!

Recently, Corona Extra, the product of Grupo Modelo in Mexico, recently unveiled their latest Commercial as a part of their Corona Summer 2016 campaign. The video, which features a travelling Corona Beer can, uses the late Rocksteady Artist Hopeton Lewis’ 1966/67 hit, “Take It Easy (Get It Here)“. The single was produced by Sam Mitchell for the Merritone Label and was considered the song that heralded the ascension of Rocksteady music movement. Hopeton Lewis was also known to record in Jamaica the first ever song about Marijuana (Cool Collie), and had a good run of hits in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Lewis was also the founder of the Hopeton Lewis Caribbean Gospel Music Awards and owner of Caribbean Gospel Jubilee (CGJ), an Online Radio Station.
