The Queen of Reggae Marcia Griffiths is ready for her closeup in her latest video for the Silly Walks Disco & Jr. Blender produced, “Holding You Close“. Directed by Til Maier with editing by Felix Zenker and Graphics by Typeholics/Henning Weskamp, Marcia brings not only the beautiful voice, but the regal look as the video becomes a live Magazine spread filled with lyrics and wonderful backdrops. Chip Off The Old Block: Meet The New Kids Of Dancehall x Reggae (Pt. 4)

First they started out as the youth of the Dancehall/Reggae culture, now they’re parents with growing kids. It isn’t unusual for the child of an Entertainer to follow in their parent’s footsteps one way or the other as at times they bring a modern take on their parent’s creations, or create their own lane. Some of the most famous off springs include Stephen, Ziggy, and Damian “Junior Gong” Marley (Sons of Bob Marley), Chino and Di Genius (Sons of Freddie McGregor), Junior Tucker (Son of Jimmy Tucker), Morgan Heritage (Children of Denroy Morgan), Tarrus Riley (Son of Jimmy Riley), Queen Ifrica (Daughter of Derrick Morgan), Protoje (Son of Lorna Bennett), Chronixx (Son of Chronicle) and many more. In part 4 of a few part series, I feature more of the new set of kids on the scene whose parents have covered much ground in their respective careers.

Harry J Allstars "Liquidator"

OLDIES SUNDAY: The Harry J Allstars – The Liquidator (1969)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from The Harry J Allstars, lead by the late Producer, Harry Johnson a.k.a. Harry J. Titled “The Liquidator“, this was an instrumental created in 1969 for Harry J Records. The people involved in the creation along with Harry included Winston Wright (Organs), Aston Barrett (Bass), and Carlton Barrett (Percussion). It was said the Instrumental was originally made for Singer Tony Scott’s “What Am I To Do” minus a few elements. It was recorded but Harry Johnson bought the rights to the song, licensed it to Trojan Records with credit to The Harry J Allstars and added more instrumentals.

“The Liquidator” became a huge success where on October 1969, it peaked at #9 on the UK Singles Chart and in 1980 it peaked at #42. The Instrumental was also became one of the anthems for the emerging “SkinHead” youth subculture. The Bass line for “The Liquidator” was later sampled by American Producer Al Bell, which was used for the massive “I’ll Take You There” single performed by The Staple Singers in 1972. It has since been sampled by Chubb Rock, Dennis AlCapone, Bassomatic and others while it was covered by “Ernie” Ranglin, Val Bennett, Keith Levene and others. “The Liquidator” is also used by popular Football teams Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, and Wolverhampton Wanderers to name a few. Chelsea is one of the teams to have claimed first usage of the Instrumental and is played in tribute to the winners of the UEFA Champions League.

Mixtape Movements: @DiscJockFifty – Eazy Medz Oldies Jugglin’

Today’s mixtape comes from Jamaican DJ, Fifty and it promises to be a great one. Titled “Eazy Medz Oldies Jugglin‘”, this is a throwback reggae mix of some of the best songs from the 1990s. Featuring hits from Beres Hammond, Junior Tucker, Abijah, Chalice, Luciano, the late Garnet Silk and many others. This mix is so awesome for some of these songs brought me back to my childhood, especially the opening track (Dance Hall Monic by Chalice) and the Garnet Silk selections. Great collection for those who need to travel back in time though the hits. Check out the mix below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

Titled “Icon” and produced by Dawg House Production on the Bad Bounce Riddim, Konshens pays tribute to some of the Dancehall/Reggae Icons who paved the way for many other artists and put Jamaica on the map. OLDIES SUNDAY: Beres Hammond x Marcia Griffiths (@QueenOfReggae) – Live On (1992)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from two legendary singers, Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths. Seeing that this is the last week in February and I haven’t posted a love song this would make a perfect one to end the “Love” theme for the month. Titled “Live On” and produced by Donovan Germain for Penthouse Records in 1992 on the “College Rock” Riddim.

“Live On” finds these two singers talking about being there for each other through good and bad times, expressing the feelings they have for each other and proclaiming that even through old age they’ll still be close and live on.
