NEW VIDEO: @DJKhaled – Ain’t Nobody Got Dubs Like This

In the Dancehall culture, one of most important aspects is the Dubplate. Vital in Soundclashes and dances, it can either make or break a Sound System. Today, via Boomshoots, DJ/Producer DJ Khaled shows off some of his most cherished Dubplates. Khaled, no stranger to the Dancehall culture, played dubs from the likes of Buju Banton, Bounty Killa, Beres Hammond, Capleton, and more. This is a great watch (and listen) here as I’ve been familiar with DJ Khaled’s presences in the Dancehall. Older fans might remember his appearances at events such as “Fully Loaded” and his contributions via mixtapes. Can he beat Wyclef for having the most expensive dubplate? Stay tuned. VegasYesterday on Hot 97, Mr. Vegas made a guest appearance. Not a stranger to the radio station, he spoke to Cipha Sounds and Old Man Ebro about his origins including his stage names, his well publicized relationship woe and not seeing his daughter, his thoughts on Vybz Kartel’s trial and the guilty verdict, Buju Banton being in jail, trying to avoid getting in trouble, showing respect to Bounty Killa, his recording process, and highlighting that Jamaica has a lot of talent. Not a bad interview here, what I commend him for is despite having a feud with Bounty Killa, he shows him respect here and not throw him under a bus. [In respect to the 17th anniversary of Biggie Smalls’ passing, my Oldies Sunday selection features a song he sampled on his first album.]

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Deejay Pan Head. Titled “Gunman Tune” with production by Lloyd “John John” James Jr. on the “Soap Riddim” and distribution by Father & Son Records in 1991, we hear Pan Head paying tribute to all the gun men in Jamaica while showing disrespect to informants (or snitches). He also speaks on the different communities that the gunmen reside in, the types of weaponry they have in their artillery, how they use them and the type of friends gunmen and informants should have.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Buju Banton – Love Sponge (1997)

As we are facing the closing hours of this Valentine Weekend, there’s nothing like the oldies to add a finishing touch. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Mark Myrie a.k.a. Buju Banton and it’s dedicated to all the lovers. Titled “Love Sponge” and produced by Buju for Gargamel Productions in 1997, we hear Buju making a dedication to his lover. He goes on to detail how much she means to him, when they’re together they enjoy each other’s company, they make great things happen, and when they’re apart he gets miserable. With Buju’s infectious delivery, choice lyrics and a great production, this song went on to become one of Buju’s biggest hits and a song that’s made for couples when it’s time for a slow dance.
