Ever met someone who instantly got you in your feelings? Always looking for love in the wrong way? Well maybe you can relate with Jamaican newcomers Djavan and Damani a.k.a. Friday Night Cru as they present to you their debut single and video. Titled “Monáe“, the single was produced by Austin Marc, while the visual was directed by Adam Armond. The single is a blend of Dancehall, Hip Hop, and Pop influences and finds the Artists (including collaborator LEO. who wasn’t present in the video) meeting the girl that embodies the swagger of the beautiful Janelle Monáe (whom the single draws inspiration from), and making moves. To hear them say it, she’s a “lil bad thing“! The new wave of Artists in Jamaica show respect to those before them, but draw influences from every genre out now to make their own unique sound. Barrington Levy Gets Sampled On @MeganRyte’s “On & On”!

If you’re familiar with Hot 97, you’re aware of one of their personalities, DJ Megan Ryte. Recently she announced that she has signed with Interscope Records, and in celebration of her achievement, she released her debut single, “On & On“! Produced by MyBoyRoach, this blends some Caribbean vibes thanks to Tory Lanez, Hood Celebrityy, and the legendary Barrington Levy who appears as a sample. The song, which aims to prep listeners for the Summer fun and love, sampled Levy’s 1994 single “Be Strong“. Produced by Levy and released through the Lipstic Label, “Be Strong” was featured on his 1993 project, “Barrington“, and given the acoustic treatment on his Album “Acousticalevy” which was released in 2015. The song finds Levy trying to do right with his lady, but is bombarded with a lot of trials throughout. The Artwork for “On & On” was also inspired by Levy’s 2008 Album, “Teach The Youth: Barrington Levy & Friends At Joe Gibbs (1980-85)“.

With that in mind, he recently released his latest project, “Fragmented“. Featuring 13 tracks, he shares his stories about his experiences and journey from Jamaica to the US, and drops some consciousness throughout. He aims to grab more ears thanks to his unique blend of Hip Hop, Dancehall, and Jazz sounds with assistance from Warren Xclnce, DA, 4Real, Canis Major, and more. Joining him on his musical journey are the likes of Roe Summerz, Royal Blu, and Kapital Stone. From acts like Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, and Bounty Killa, to dance moves like “Pepperseed”, “Bogle”, and “Butterfly”, Jamaica’s music culture went places. Looking to the 90s for his latest track, Bronx Rapper Pop Dollarz drops “Lyrical Anthem“! Borrowing Ini Kamoze’s smash hit, “Here Comes The Hot Stepper“, Dollarz goes in a lil over the Salaam Remi production while allowing the OG track to breathe throughout. A nice shout out to the 90s Dancehall, and many places that bumped the music back then. Remember when “Hot Stepper” got featured in a JC Penny Commercial? Still love you like that…
