Reflect On The Late Prince Buster With His “Prince Of Peace Concert” In Japan!

We’ve recently lost the man who helped to revolutionize Ska and Rocksteady Music, Cecil Bustamante Campbell, more popularly known as Prince Buster. A musical Pioneer, a brilliant Songwriter and Producer, Prince Buster paved the way that many Reggae and Ska Artists worldwide follow to this day. Today we reflect on the Icon by showcasing his “Prince Of Peace Concert” that was held in Japan in 2003, and a 1998 Levi’s Jeans Commercial featuring the single, “Whine and Grine“.

NEW VIDEO: Hopeton Lewis’ “Take It Easy” Featured In @Corona Commercial!

Recently, Corona Extra, the product of Grupo Modelo in Mexico, recently unveiled their latest Commercial as a part of their Corona Summer 2016 campaign. The video, which features a travelling Corona Beer can, uses the late Rocksteady Artist Hopeton Lewis’ 1966/67 hit, “Take It Easy (Get It Here)“. The single was produced by Sam Mitchell for the Merritone Label and was considered the song that heralded the ascension of Rocksteady music movement. Hopeton Lewis was also known to record in Jamaica the first ever song about Marijuana (Cool Collie), and had a good run of hits in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Lewis was also the founder of the Hopeton Lewis Caribbean Gospel Music Awards and owner of Caribbean Gospel Jubilee (CGJ), an Online Radio Station. Lewis passed away in September 2014 as a result of Kidney Failure. Many thanks to the good folks over at Commercial Tunage for the assistance and Genelle Golding for the heads up! Fresh out of the time machine today is Dancehall artist, Dreggae with a new project. “Introducing Dreggae” is a 5 track set of songs where he pays tribute to the foundation Jamaican producers and artists. Here he flows effortlessly over old school riddims, and doesn’t devalue them with repetitive subject matter. Something the old heads can respect, and the youth will keep in rotation while researching Dancehall/Reggae music. OLDIES SUNDAY: Alton Ellis – Willow Tree (1967)

After dropping Raine Seville’s “Willow Tree” yesterday, I felt it was only right to play one of the original songs. Today I feature a song by the late Alton Ellis a.k.a. the GodFather of Rocksteady. Titled “Willow Tree” and produced by Coxsone Records in 1967, this was a cover of Chuck Jackson’s “My Willow Tree” which was done in 1962 but never made it to the music charts. This song is about finding new song all while sparing the “Willow Tree” from sharing the pain of past failed relationships.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Folkes Brothers – Oh Carolina (1960)

In recognition of Shaggy’s 20 year anniversary of his “Oh Carolina” hit, I thought I might give you all the original version. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from The Folkes Brothers, the original artists behind the “Oh Carolina” single. The Folkes Brothers comprised of John, Mico, and Junior Folkes. Produced and released by Prince Buster in 1960, this is a love song where the artists are here urging Carolina to come back into the lead singer’s life after having bouts of sadness and loneliness.
