OLDIES SUNDAY: @MackaB – False Preacher (1988)

With Jamaica slowly being turned into a 20 season Mystery series shown on Netflix with the news of Kevin Smith and his cult, it’s only right that Oldies Sunday digs in the crates for a selection. This week, we stop in England to check out Reggae legend Macka B’s “False Preacher“.

Produced by Mad Professor and released through Ariwa Sounds in 1988, Macka B plays the role of “Pastor Theodore Love Money” who makes a list of demands that his Church congregation should fulfill because “That’s what the Lord says!“. If the Pastor needs to wear new suits, let the Church goers provide for it. He needs a BMW? Let them pay for it! The single was featured on Macka B’s 1988 album, “We’ve Had Enough!“, which features plenty of commentary from the man himself. With the story of fake Preachers and Pastors being a very common one for many, Macka B has been calling those hustlers out for many years. Some have lead cults, some have made millions and are living better than their members, and some have claimed to have had the direct line to God. Many Church goers have been lied to, tricked, bamboozled, and lead astray, and many fake Pastors and false Prophets will have to answer for their crimes one day.

Since “False Preacher”, Macka B has released numerous albums, and has been a Youtube/Social Media favourite thanks to pairing a healthy lifestyle with his lyrical prowess. He has even been name dropped by popular Media Personality Desus Nice on his “Bodega Boys Podcast“.

On August 29, 2021, the world lost the ICONIC Lee “Scratch” Perry. Though he may be gone physically, his music and influence continues to live on through many. We salute the man who never believed in being boxed in, and has paved the way for how many of us make and consume music today. In tribute to his work, we highlight him in “Sampling Lee “Scratch” Perry: A Playlist“!

From Bob Marley, to Lil Wayne, to Busta Rhymes, to Alborosie, to Sizzla, to UB40, and from Reggae, to Electronica, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s work has connected with many of what we enjoy. Jamaican Hip Hop collective The Council a.k.a. The Council of the Gods returns with new music. Despite the pandemic putting a halt to many things, Five Steez, The Sickest Drama, and Nomad Carlos managed to fight through the blocks, and make something happen. Finally seeing an opening, they stepped out with their latest offering titled, “Trilogy“.

Featuring 8 tracks, The Council teamed up with the legendary Equiknoxx Music label. Production come from the minds of Time Cow, Son Raw, and Sawandi, and they present Dub, Jazz, and Electronica inspired beats to build a great vibe. The Council in true fashion stepped out with their usual lyrical abilities, and handled each beat like they’re supposed to. While every Dancehall and Reggae Artist got a chance to put out new music this year in the middle of the pandemic, Jamaican Hip Hop had to show up and make some noise. Tune in to something new today.

In today’s world, many are unsure of who really has their backs. Regardless, we have to trust in a higher power. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the great Yabby You with the track, “Deliver Me From My Enemies“.

With Yabby You handling the production and released through Grove Music in 1977, “Deliver Me From My Enemies” is Yabby’s way of asking God for protection from those who wish to endanger him. He utilizes Psalm 143:8-10 throughout the song through a chant like delivery, and the sounds that accompany makes it for a very spiritual listen. The track was featured on his album of the same name in 1977. Born Vivian Jackson, he had a rough upbringing due to poverty, and after experiencing severe Arthritis at age 17, he became partially crippled. He found himself hustling in the streets for quite some time before finding success with the single, “Conquering Lion”. From there, he became known in various circles, and recorded and produced for many upcoming and established Artists. He passed away in 2010 from a Brain Aneurysm.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Tappa Zukie – Freedom (1976)

Break the chains and kick down the gates, it’s Emancipation Sunday on Oldies Sunday! Parts of the Caribbean recognize August 1 (and August 2 on weekdays if the 1st is on a weekend) as Emancipation Day. It’s a day that commemorates the abolition of slavery, but we’re still fighting against many other forms of depression around the world. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the great Tappa Zukie with his track, “Freedom“.

Produced by Tappa Zukie and released through the KLIK Label in 1976. “Freedom” finds Tappa Zukie calling for the liberation of black people who have been held captive for centuries. He flexes a mix of singing and toasting inna dub style on the track, and he can be heard saying “freedom a wha di natty dread want…” throughout. The song came around the time when black consciousness was at an all time high, and it makes its mark an important song of the times, with messages that are still relevant today. “Freedom” was included on Zukie’s 1976 album, “MPLA“. As we recognize an important day, may we still fight to break the new chains of oppression.

On October 6, Jamaica and the world lost another Icon, Producer Extraordinaire Bunny “Striker” Lee. Known as “The Gorgon“, Bunny Lee was man who has helped to shape music as we know it as he was an early adopter of Dub Music along with the late pioneer King Tubby. He was a pioneer of the Reggae Music market in the UK, and he was also the man who produced former child star now Dancehall Icon Beenie Man’s debut album. If you didn’t know, Bunny “Striker” Lee is one of the fathers of the Remix! Today, we pay tribute to his production work by highlighting some of his classics, and those who sampled him in our latest Playlist!

From Koffee, to Kardinal Offishall, to KRS-One, to Sister Nancy, to Sean Paul, learn a thing or few today, and enjoy some great music!
