When Jamaica’s involved in something, it’s gonna be great. Tonight, BET kicked off their annual Hip Hop Awards. While they’ve featured some of the best in music, many were waiting for the much anticipated “Reggae Cypher“!

Featuring Shenseea, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Skip Marley, Koffee, with ZJ Liquid handling the DJ role, the artists did what they had to do over Damian “Junior Gong” Marley’s classic “Welcome To JamRock“, and represented Jamaica and Dancehall. Given that Covid 19 is still around, the Cypher had to be pre-recorded for broadcast. Can you imagine if all artists were performing live? Lots of high energy would be given. Big up the artists, another one for Jamaica!

Dancehall & Reggae Music continue to influence many worldwide whether through the various sounds, lyrics, or even some of the people who create from the genres. Today’s entry is no different as famed Hip Hop Producer 9th Wonder dabbled in a bit of the sounds in his latest compilation album, “Jamla Is The Squad 2“! While the album features a host of tracks for every flavour, it’s the opening track that will surprise and awe many. On “Welcome To JamRoc“, the opening vocals come courtesy of Dancehall Artist Quick Cook, while the following production samples Damian “Junior Gong” Marley’sWelcome To JamRock“, and Ini Kamoze’sWorld A Music“. With 9th tackling the production, Rapsody, Heather Victoria, GQ, Reuben Vincent, and Ian Kelly provide the lyrics that go well with the dope sounds. This isn’t the first time 9th sampled Jamaican music as he borrowed sounds from The Mighty Diamonds on the tracks “L.A.” and “Bad Man” by MURS, and Third World on the track “Let It Go” by Little Brother. Jamla Is The Squad 2 is out now, check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

.@LupeFiasco Tries Patois, & Teams Up With Damian Marley On New Album, “DROGAS WAVE”

If you’re a Hip Hop head, then you’re familiar with Chicago Rapper Lupe Fiasco. He has collaborated with the likes of Kanye West and Jay Z, and gave us hits like “Superstar“, “Kick, Push“, and “The Show Goes On“. Recently, he released his 7th studio album, “DROGAS WAVE” with enough bars to keep fans happy till the next project. What made this project more interesting, is Lupe tapping into some Jamaican influences here. On “Gold vs the Right Things to do“, he utilizes patois throughout, and although it may make some of us cringe, he drops some serious lines in this one to make up for it (he did a better job than these Actors in this article). On “Kingdom” he teams up with another potent lyricist, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley as they unleash more consciousness into the world. For those familiar with Lupe, this project is a great listen and has garnered positive reviews so far. If you’re new here and into lyrics, you can’t go wrong with Lupe. Today marks the 45th Birthday of the one they call “Gargamel“, Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie! While the word is he’ll be a free man by the end of the year, we still celebrate him as if he’s already here. His music has touched the lives of many over the years, and many have shown respect in the form of covers, tribute songs, and by sampling him. Today, we feature a few songs that have sampled him. #FREEBUJU! Check them out below, and show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

Third World Meets Tuff Gong: Songs That Sampled @BobMarley & @ThirdWorldBand

February 6 marks the day two Reggae legends were born, Bob Marley, and Bunny Rugs. Bob Marley started out in Trench Town, and became a larger than life Icon while Bunny Rugs made his mark as a Solo Artist, and Lead Vocalist for one of Reggae’s most successful Bands, Third World. While many pay respects to them today, we’d like to look back at a few songs that further immortalized them through samples. Samples will come from Bob Marley’s solo singles, or with The Wailers, and from Third World Band during Rugs’ time. Enjoy!

1. Bob Marley & The Wailers – Johnny Was (1976)

Sampled on: Notorious B.I.G. – Hold Ya Head (2005)

2. Third World – Got To Get Along (1976)

Sampled on: Little Brother ft. Mos Def – Let It Go (2006)
