Today’s Oldies Sunday selections come from two Lions of Reggae Music, Sizzla Kalonji and Jah Cure. Titled “King In This Jungle“, this was produced by Beres Hammond for his Harmony House Productions in 1998. In this song we hear the two artists speak out on those who wish to oppress people but stumble with the help of Jah. They also consider themselves Kings in a society that’s like a Jungle and encourage people to follow Jah and have more faith in the teachings.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Courtney John – I Go Crazy (2000)


Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Reggae artist formerly known as “Yogie“, Courtney John. Titled “I Go Crazy“, this was a Reggae remake of the 1977 Paul Davis song of the same name. “I Go Crazy” was featured on John’s debut album “Miracles” which was released in 2000. The song spoke about John meeting an old lover who he thought he has fully gotten over, only to end up recapturing feelings for her again. Produced by the artist himself, this delivered a beautiful production and recruited great back up singers. Although his first attempt in the entertainment industry started in 1993, “I Go Crazy” was Courtney John’s breakout single with a great music video to match.

Titled “Mama’s Cooking” and produced by Harvel Hart and Delroy Schobourgh on the “Redemption SongRiddim in 1996, Merciless speaks on his love for his mother, her culinary skills and highlights all the other good things that she has done for him. He also speaks about people who have disrespected their own mothers and hopes never to be like them.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Sister Nancy – Bam Bam (1982)

In recognition of the recent Reebok Skyscape commercial, I present to you the song that was used in it from Dancehall artist, Sister Nancy. Titled “Bam Bam” and produced by the late Winston Riley for Techniques Records on the “Stalag Riddim” in 1982, Nancy speaks about being an ambitious woman, her lyrical prowess that will “nice upJamaica, growing up in Princeton 6, and being a very unique person along her infectious chorus “What a Bam Bam…“. “Bam Bam” was a single on Sister Nancy’s debut album, “One,Two” which was released in 1982 by Techniques Records. Sister Nancy is regarded as the first female Dancehall artist and the first female deejay to tour internationally. “Bam Bam” is her most famous single and borrows a little from Toots And The Maytals’ 1966 hit “What A Bam Bam“.

In recognition of the “Fire ManCapleton’s birthday today (April 13 If you’re reading this late), I present to you one of Capleton’s best concerts. Performing at a Justice Sound event in Jacksonville, Florida, Capleton had the crowd eating out of his hands as he burned the fire and delivered an onslaught of hits. Keep the little ones away and loud speakers, lots of profanity here. Since his start in 1989, Capleton has been a household name in Jamaica and the world over promoting consciousness, and upliftment of the people. OLDIES SUNDAY: @FederationSound x @IamTheKartel – From Time To Time (2003)


In recognition of Federation Sound’s 15th anniversary and Vybz Kartel’s career that has been stalled by his recent convictions, today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes in the form of a mixtape. Titled “From Time To Time“, this mixtape increased the popularity of Vybz Kartel and marked as the first collaboration between him and Federation Sound. Released in 2003, this mixtape featured hits from the artist, exclusive dubs and more that brought him from a local star to an International name to know. Founded in 1999 by Max Glazer, Kenny Meez, and Cipha Sounds, Federation Sound was formed to help bring Reggae music and message to all walks of life in the form of exclusive mixes and dubplates. With current members such as Alric & Boyd, and past member the late Disco D, Federation Sound became a force to be reckoned with in their 15 year career.
