Going Down: Songs With Taboo Lyrics In Dancehall

Recently, a certain Artist opened a can of worms with a rather “spicy” single. While folks are in a uproar about it, we’ve heard it all before. The Dancehall culture has had a stance on certain sexual practices for years, but with more people having an open mind, some Artists tend to stir the pot by adding taboo themes in their singles. Here are a few that sparked the conversation.

1. Sycamore Tree – Lady Saw (1996)

In a year when the “Joyride Riddim” was taking over airwaves, the Dancehall Artist born Marion Hall used her platform to chase away men who wanted oral “favors” on “Sycamore Tree”. At the time, a woman who was known to do such things were often chastised, even from the recipients. Things have changed in 20 years…Do you remember?

2. Tanya Stephens – Freaky Type (1998)

Before your favourite Artist did it, Tanya was not afraid to put a spotlight on it. If you “burned” it out in public, but did it in the dark, you may not have liked this song. To Tanya it was always the ones most vocal against it were the “professionals”. Over a Baddis Production, she sure liked the “Freaky Type”.

Minister Marion Hall, Marion Hall, Jamaica, Gospel Music, 13thStreetPromotions, I Had Jesus, Lady Saw, When God Speaks

@MinisterMarion Sees The Glory After The Storm In “I Had Jesus”!

Minister Marion Hall (Formerly Lady Saw) has been through a lot in her life and musical career. Recently she made the move to shed her life as a Dancehall Artist and become a Minister for the Lord. While she works on spreading the word of God, she shares “I Had Jesus“, a single from her upcoming Album, “When God Speaks“. Dedicated to those who have been through many troubles and unfortunate events, Marion shares her own stories but reminds us that she didn’t face her battles alone as Jesus was there to help her put them all behind her. A powerful entry from the Minister and while Gospel Music isn’t a new lane for her (as she has had Gospel singles earlier in her career), it will definitely be refreshing to hear more as she prepares to release her Album on July 8, 2016. Check out the track below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

PRESS RELEASE: @NadeshaStarface Celebrates The Release Of “Hold My Man”

Overnight female sensation, Starface has come to prominence after a controversial performance at Sting 2015. Her onstage aura was compelling and bold with a tongue far from shy. This encouraged police officers to pull the plug on her at the annual event.

The newcomer is strongly influenced by the “Queen of the Dancehall”, Lady Saw, who has touted her as the next big thing. It is evident that Starface has traits similar to Saw as an up-comer. She may very well be next in line to accept the baton pass, as the queen journeys on to a new spiritual path, leaving the Dancehall race behind.

Hold My Man” is the title of the new video which she celebrates the release of via her label, Konsequence Muzik. The video, which is filled with sexual appeal, was shot by Kerro and now available exclusively on StarfaceofficialVEVO. She has also released a single about her debut Sting experience titled, “Mash It Up” which is already in rotation.
