OLDIES SUNDAY: @BujuOfficial – Me Too Bad (2005)

If you’ve been unaware, Reggae/Dancehall Icon Buju Banton is finally a free man! Having done his time in Federal Prison, Friday December 7 became a day to remember when word got out that he would be making his triumphant return to Jamaica, and return to freedom. Today on Oldies Sunday, we salute the Gargamel’s  return with one of our favourites, “Me Too Bad” (o/c “Too Bad)! Produced by Leftside & Esco on the “Throwback Giggy Riddim“, Buju effortlessly rides the riddim as he flexes his rather uncanny ability to drive the ladies crazy and requesting his presence ever so often. With lyrics like “Outta road, nuff gyal a mad ova me“, and “Mi Babymada seh mi bad, mi too bad…“, you know Buju has a way with the ladies. The single was released through VP Records and quickly became a hot track in the streets. It was also featured on his 2006 album, “Too Bad“, and became his first #1 hit in years. With Gargamel’s newfound freedom, many fans are awaiting his return to the booth to unleash the tracks that will have the place in a frenzy, but for now we wish he takes as much time to rejuvenate himself and reconnect with society and loved ones. If you want to check out more Buju content, check out our Buju Samples article we did on his Birthday, the throwback “Love Sponge” for the lovers, and Lila Ike wanting to work with Buju as he’s an inspiration in an Interview with us. OLDIES SUNDAY: Aswad – Don’t Turn Around (1988)

Don’t you just love hearing a Reggae cover version of a popular song? Well you’ll love our selection today on “Oldies Sunday“! Today we go back to the 80’s with UK Reggae Band, Aswad with the track, “Don’t Turn Around“. Produced by Chris Porter, this was released through the Mango Label and Island Records in 1988. The song was originally a Tina Turner B-Side written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond and released in 1986, but gained the attention of Aswad when they heard Luther Ingram’s 1987 cover version. The Reggae version turned out to be a hit for the Band as it was the #1 single in New Zealand and UK (with a Silver certification), and a top ten hit in Norway, Ireland, Netherlands, and Belgium. It also influenced Swedish Pop group Ace of Base’s cover version which the Band helped to produce.

Aswad went on to release over 21 albums and scored a couple more hits, but “Don’t Turn Around” is still a crowd favourite. Nice up your Sunday by checking out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

Buss A “Toast” For @OriginalKoffee’s Latest Single!

If you know you’re grateful for the blessings, put up your hands right now and give thanks! Recording Artist Koffee has been on a roll in such a short span of time. Since her tribute to Usain Bolt going viral, she has been enjoying a massive buzz thanks to her singles that followed. We’ve shown her love as one of the female Artists you should watch out for earlier this year, and she’s climbing to the highest peak. With the announcement of her signing to Columbia Records recently, we know she has a lot in store to present to the world. Kicking off 2019 early, she unleashed her major label debut track titled, “Toast“! Produced by Izy Beats and Walshy Fire, we find Koffee speaking on her progress so far, giving thanks for the blessings that have followed, and of course entertaining us with her unique delivery. We also get a video which features cameos from Chronixx and Protoje, and is shot in the style of old school home videos thanks to Xavier Damase. Gratitude is a must. Off the soon to be released “Rapture EP“, check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

Dancehall & Reggae Music continue to influence many worldwide whether through the various sounds, lyrics, or even some of the people who create from the genres. Today’s entry is no different as famed Hip Hop Producer 9th Wonder dabbled in a bit of the sounds in his latest compilation album, “Jamla Is The Squad 2“! While the album features a host of tracks for every flavour, it’s the opening track that will surprise and awe many. On “Welcome To JamRoc“, the opening vocals come courtesy of Dancehall Artist Quick Cook, while the following production samples Damian “Junior Gong” Marley’sWelcome To JamRock“, and Ini Kamoze’sWorld A Music“. With 9th tackling the production, Rapsody, Heather Victoria, GQ, Reuben Vincent, and Ian Kelly provide the lyrics that go well with the dope sounds. This isn’t the first time 9th sampled Jamaican music as he borrowed sounds from The Mighty Diamonds on the tracks “L.A.” and “Bad Man” by MURS, and Third World on the track “Let It Go” by Little Brother. Jamla Is The Squad 2 is out now, check out the track below, and share with a friend. Show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
